A deep-dive into the top 3 schools for each of the three seasons

The seasons are over, the Summer has begun and high school sports are, at best, just under three months away. With that in mind, let’s take a deep-dive into the three best schools for each of the three seasons in the past athletics year — Fall, Winter and Spring — to wrap up the 2024-25 campaign.

The schools listed below were determined by the amount of state championships won in the specific season and the individual performance by the players on each team for the school.

Fall

1. Pope

The girls cross-country team won its seventh state title and first since 2020. Josie Hutchinson posted two season-best times with a 11:20.78 in the two-mile and 17:58.15 in the 500-meter.

Greyhound flag football repeated as state champions for Division 3 with a 19-6 win over Pace Academy. Pope went 26-2 this season with a 7-0 record against opponents in Region-D3 Area 6. They had the number one scoring offense and scoring defense in Division 3 with their scoring offense being ranked No. 1 statewide and scoring defense ranked No. 4 statewide. Abbey Bensman threw for 4,660 yards and 83 touchdowns. Addie Daughtry and Sarah Gentry led the team on the receiving end as Daughtry totaled 1,513 yards and Gentry totaled 1,115 yards. Gentry and Daughtry were top two in touchdowns for the Greyhounds with Gentry at 29 and Daughtry at 26. Claire Huebecker was third with 12 touchdowns. On the defensive side, Daughtry set a new Pope single-season record for flag pulls with 73. Mac Wiley and Addie Adair both recorded 20 sacks and Daughtry was the leader in interceptions with nine.

Pope volleyball was crowned state champion for the second-straight season and sixth time in program history. The team went 36-5 and 7-1 in Region 5A-Area 6. Jahan Lalli sits at fourth on the all-time Pope assists list in a single season with 1,111 along with a tie for fourth in assists per set with 9.4 assists. Amanda Vlkovic is tied for third in digs with 542.

2. Milton

The Eagles boys cross-country team won its second state title in program history and first since 2017. Justin Sevel and Everett Lawder placed in the top 10 at the state championship with Sevel finishing in seventh with a time of 16:43.86 in the 5000-meter run and Lawder finishing in eighth with a time of 16:46.16 in the same race. Milton’s average time in the 5k was 17:04 which placed the Eagles in first, above Clarke Central who had an average time of 17:25.

Milton football repeated as state champs by posting a perfect 15-0 season where the Eagles defeated Langston Hughes 56-35 in the title game. This is the Eagles’ third football state title in school history. The team averaged 44 points-per-game and allowed an average of 13 points-per-game. Miami-commit Luke Nickel had another excellent season throwing for 3,744 yards and 44 touchdowns. Tristan Lester was a force in the run game, rushing for 1,848 yards and 27 touchdowns. The Eagles had three receivers post double-digit touchdowns this season. CJ Wiley with 15 touchdowns and 1,122 yards, Ethan Barbour with 12 touchdowns and 989 yards, and Tristen Payne with 10 touchdowns and 932 yards.

 3. Wesleyan

Wesleyan softball won its fourth-straight state title after the Lady Wolves defeated Hebron Christian 2-1 in a winner-take-all game that went to extra innings. Avery Tucker hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth inning and Jessica Epps was able to shut down Hebron Christian in the bottom half of the inning to clinch the Lady Wolves’ fourth-straight championship and sixth overall in program history. Wesleyan girls cross-country won its fifth-straight championship and 10th overall in school history. Weezie Moore placed second at the state championship in the 5k with a time of 20:14.86, Eva Murphy finished in fourth with a time of 20:28.65, Margaret Moore finished in sixth with a time of 20:36.52, and Kyra Brubaker finished in 10th with a time of 20:57.71.

Winter

1. Holy Innocents’

The Golden Bears boys basketball team rode an impressive 27-4 record and 12-0 record in Region 5-1A Private to win its first-ever state title in program history. Holy Innocents’ dominated North Cobb Christian 84-45 in the state title game. Caleb Wilson won the 2025 MaxPreps Georgia High School Basketball Player of the Year Award and also played in this year’s McDonald’s All-American Games. He scored 33 points and snagged 13 rebounds and contributed defensively with three blocks and two steals in the state championship game. The Lady Golden Bears basketball team won its fifth state title in program history and first since 2020 with a 57-39 win over Hebron Christian. Similar to the boys team, the girls went undefeated in their region with a 7-0 record in Region 5-1A Private along with an overall record of 25-5. Stanford-commit Hailee Swain won the 2025 MaxPreps Georgia High School Basketball Player of the Year Award. She totaled 30 points and gathered 10 rebounds in the state championship game. Just like Wilson, Swain was invited to the McDonald’s All-American Games.

 2. Brookwood

The boys swim and dive team won its first state title since 2019, finishing with 409 points in the state championship meet at Georgia Tech. Cal-commit William Stanton finished with a 1:45.01 in the 200 Yard IM and a 47.46 in the 100 Yard Backstroke, finishing first in both events. The Broncos’ 200 Yard Medley Relay team just barely defeated North Gwinnett as they posted a time of 1:32.10 and their 200 Yard Freestyle Relay had the same result happen as they finished with a time of 1:25.37.

The Brookwood girls repeated as state champions with 427 total points in the state championship meet. Nicole Amike swam a 23.18 in the 50 Yard Freestyle and a 50.94 in the 100 Yard Freestyle, finishing first in both events. Hailey Dopson won the 100 Yard Backstroke in a close race with a time of 55.13. The Lady Broncos 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team also got first as they scored a time of 1:35.57.

3. Lovett

The Lions wrestling team won its 14th state championship in school history as Lovett scored 191.5 points in the Class 2A state title to beat out defending 2A champions Rockmart. The individual champions for Lovett were Hayes Kennedy in the 106-pound match, Xavier Mance in the 120-pound match, Cael Kusky in the 126-pound match, Patrick Smyth in the 132-pound match, and Chris Mance in the 190-pound match.

The Lovett girls swim and dive team won its first-ever state championship as the Lady Lions finished with 410 points in the state title meet to sneak by Greater Atlanta Christian who had 402 points. Decker Stedman won the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:59.89 and Alexis Dalton won the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:03.83. Stedman was on the Lady Lions 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team that finished at the top with a time of 3:34.28.

Spring

1. Lambert

The Longhorn boys tennis team completed the three-peat with a 3-2 win over Walton. Chase Dobra in number two singles lost the first set 6-3, but rallied back from a 3-1 deficit in the second set to win 6-4, and then won the third set 6-1 to clinch the title for Lambert. The Longhorns number two doubles team of Andrei Grigorian and Ryan Koh recorded a 6-0 sweep of the Raiders. Lambert’s boys lacrosse team won the Division 3 state championship marking the Longhorns seventh-ever title as they finished a perfect 22-0 season with a 12-0 shutout over South Forsyth. Lady Longhorns golf team dominated its way to a sixth-straight state championship as the team shot -11, including a -9 from Grace Lee through two rounds.

2. Westminster

The Wildcats’ boys tennis won its fifth-straight state title and 26th all-time as Westminster beat Marist 3-1. The Lady Wildcat tennis team won its 24th all-time state title and went back-to-back in Class 4A. Westminster took down its rival Pace Academy in the championship match with a 3-0 straight-set win. Westminster boys soccer repeated as Class 4A state champions with a 3-2 victory over Marist in a penalty shootout. The Wildcats captured their 16th-overall state title. The Wildcats finished the season with an overall record of 17-6 and a 6-2 region record in Class 4A-Area 6.

 3. Roswell

The Hornet boys lacrosse team completed its three-peat as state champions with a 13-12 overtime win over Lassiter in the Division 2 state championship game. This is Roswell’s fifth all-time state title in boys lacrosse. The Lady Hornets soccer team reclaimed its state title by defeating Northgate 1-0 on a second-half goal by Wendy’s MVP Natalie Brooks alongside lockdown defense by the Hornets. The team posted a perfect season with a 22-0 overall record and 6-0 record in Region 7-5A.
