West Forsyth’s Abby Batts is looking to lead the Lady Wolverines back to the top of the GHSA’s largest classification. Batts, a Tennessee-commit, helped West Forsyth to their third championship in the past four seasons last year.
She led the team in goals with 27, more than double the next closest player. While she was the team’s leading scorer, she will have to take on a bigger leadership role this season with the graduation of players like current BYU forward Presley Freeman. Statistically, Batts was one of the best players in 7A last year, scoring the second-most goals, only behind South Gwinnett’s Lauren Ward. In addition, she finished eighth in points, just 14 points behind first place.
Along with Batts, West Forsyth returns a plethora of talent, including four of their top five goal scorers. Junior Marlee Raymond is back after a productive 12-goal, 24-point sophomore season and will likely take on an even bigger role this year. Gabi Macer returns after a strong junior season, in which she played in 20 of the team’s 24 games, scoring six goals and accumulating 16 points. Junior defender AnnMarie Rudloff will also play a bigger role for the Lady Wolverines. In just 195 minutes played last year, she scored five goals while adding an assist.
They also return goaltender Adelei Utz, who helped West Forsyth pitch nine shutouts last season. One area where West Forsyth needs to improve is in distribution and assists. With the graduation of Presley Freeman, the team has no players who recorded more than four assists last season and only one, Gabi Macer, who had more than one. The Wolverines will look to Macer to help fill that gap. The Wolverines will start the season as 6A championship favorites; however, they will have to contend with other powerhouse programs, including Harrison, Walton, and Buford.
