The GHSA reclassification committee met Friday to discuss the possibility of switching from the current enrollment-based classifications to a competitive balance model. This model would move schools up or down based on how they perform on the field.
The committee met for the first time to begin deciding what the future will hold. They must make multiple decisions regarding the potential adoption of the competitive balance model. The first decision will be whether or not to adopt the model. The next question will involve determining how many teams move up or down and the criteria for making those decisions.
The competitive balance model has gained popularity over time.
“We did a survey,” said GHSA Executive Director Tim Scott. “At the time we did the survey, there were 83 or 85 schools in favor. There were 114, maybe 115, that were against.”
The number of schools supporting the model has grown compared to the last survey. Additionally there are now 93 schools that are undecided, 25 schools that had not heard of the proposal, and over 100 schools that did not respond. The growth in support gives the model more momentum, though it remains a close decision that will be decided by the over 200 schools who have yet to choose a side. The future will determine whether the new model is adopted or if the traditional enrollment-based method of reclassification will continue.
