South Gwinnett CB Evin McDowell commits to Mercer

2026 Cornerback Evin McDowell announced that he is committed to the Mercer Bears after taking an official visit there from June 20th to June 22nd. He received an offer from them on February 25th. McDowell received 20 D1 offers, including ones from Liberty, Bowling Green, UNC Charlotte, Eastern Michigan, Gardner-Webb, and Kennesaw State.

He is a defensive force in multiple ways as when he is in zone coverage, he is able to stay close to the line of scrimmage and make quick tackles on receivers to limit their gain. McDowell dominates with coverage on receivers for short passing plays by allowing small separation. Overall he is a lockdown corner that makes catching passes and scoring touchdowns difficult for opposing receivers.

McDowell had a breakthrough junior season with 16 total tackles, four pass breakups, and an interception. He was named First Team All-Region on defense for Region 4-6A.

McDowell aims to have an even better senior season as the Comets look to improve on their 7-4 overall record from last year that resulted in a 35-14 first round playoff loss to Hillgrove.
