Lassiter senior Lacey Scherholz is continuing to pace the Trojans’ offense at a blazing pace this season and she tallied another seven-goal performance Thursday night to lead Lassiter to a 20-6 victory over Greenbrier. Scherholz is committed to play for East Carolina University next spring and has helped spark the high-powered Lassiter offense this season as the team’s go-to offensive weapon. In the latest victory, she completed the hat-trick early in the second quarter and then piled on another pair of goals to go into the half with five goals as Lassiter enjoyed a 14-2 lead. With Scherholz attacking the net, she has found ways to open up opportunities for her teammates and she finished the game with four assists to go with her seven goals.
“Lacey has been dynamite,” Lassiter head coach Angela Brunner told the Marietta Daily Journal after the victory. “She has been pretty consistent with high numbers throughout the season. Her ability to change her speed and direction makes her an explosive attacker and she is very shifty.”
Against Greenbrier, Lassiter jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter. Senior Maddie Wardrop scored two goals and was one of five different Lassiter players that found the net in the first frame. Lassiter outscored the Wolfpack 6-0 in the second quarter and that is when Lacey took over offensively.
Lassiter eventually forced a running clock, but it did not stop the Trojans from piling on more goals and Addie Wiersma finished with four goals to go with her six assists. Additionally, Sophie Hortman tallied four goals in the scoring barrage.
Lassiter has now won nine-straight games and is 15-4 this season. More importantly, Lassiter is 10-0 at home. In the quarterfinals, however, the Trojans will have to travel south to Richmond Hill to take on the Wildcats—who are also a No. 1 seed in the Division 2 bracket. Both Lassiter and Richmond Hill observed first-round byes and Richmond Hill advanced with a 13-4 home win over East Coweta to punch their ticket to the quarterfinals. The Wildcats are 9-8 this season and one of those losses came to a common opponent in Greenbrier on March 13 when Richmond Hill fell 12-5.
As dominant as Lassiter was in the latest win, the Trojans have also proved to be a resilient team and the Trojans served Walton its first loss of the season earlier this month. Trailing 12-10 with 1:30 left in the game, Scherholz forced overtime with two clutch goals and then Wardrop delivered the game-winning goal in double overtime to get the victory.
